This test will determine key metabolic thresholds i.e., lactate threshold and lactate turnpoint to inform your training plan (i.e., training zones) and monitor progress. The test involves exercising between 5-8 submaximal stages of 3-4 minutes of increasing intensity. At the end of each stage a capillary blood sample will be obtained from the ear or finger, heart rate (HR) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE).
This test measures the maximum amount of oxygen that you can uptake and utilise during maximal exercise. It will provide a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness and predictor of aerobic performance. During the test, exercise intensity gradually increases until volitional exhaustion. At this point V̇O2max is determined, and maximal heart rate (HRmax).
Metabolic tests are assessments of fuel use (i.e. fat and carbohydrate) across a range of intensities as well as at rest. From these tests we can also establish calorie requirements, which can be subsequently be manipulated to achieve a goal such as weight loss or weight gain.
Fatmax or Resting Metabolic Rate
Select from either a Fatmax or resting metabolic rate test. Select which test at the time of booking. Select option 6 from the list when ordering.
£125
The Fatmax test is a submaximal test designed to establish your optimal exercise intensity to make use of fat as a fuel source. This test is useful for individuals wishing to train at intensities that maximise fat oxidation (i.e., body composition goals, ultra endurance events). The test involves 5 minutes of submaximal stages at a fixed intensity. The starting intensity will be very low (i.e., walking) and will incrementally increase as each stage passes (determined by the information recorded during the test). Throughout the test, expired gas will be collected and analysed to determine the point at which fat oxidation is maximised. This point is known as Fatmax. In addition, HR and RPE will be recorded.
This test requires you to sit/lie quietly in a thermoneutral environment for 20 minutes wearing a face mask where expired gas will be collected and analysed to determine the number of calories you burn at rest. The data, alongside additional information such as your physical activity levels, will help to determine your total daily energy needs. The data will also highlight your metabolic predisposition. Meaning what fuel source does your body gravitate towards
Our body composition services are ideal for individuals and athletes who want identify the composition of their bodies in preparation for an event or to achieve a specific goal. We offer a range of services to assess body composition including skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and BodPod assessment. Our practitioners are highly experienced and qualified ISAK level 1 anthropometrists and can provide you with a comprehensive assessment of your body composition.
Skinfold OR Bod Pod. You can specify which test is required after purchase. Please see below for information about each test. Select option 5 from the list when ordering.
£45
This assessment involves using precise skinfold callipers to determine the thickness of seven specific locations on the body. The thickness of these folds is a measure of the subcutaneous adipose tissue (fat beneath the skin). Skinfold assessments are performed by International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) accredited anthropometrists.
The BOD-POD is an air displacement plethysmography system to determine body composition. The test involves sitting inside the BOD POD for a total of approximately three minutes where several volume measurements will be taken. The individual is required to sit still within the BOD POD.
